WHAT WE HOLD & LEAVE BEHIND

An exhibition of photographs & poetry with reading by Oregon seasoned poets.

July 15 – September 9, 2026

OPENING Reception: Sat. July 18, 2-4PM

Poetry Reading: 3PM — Collins Gallery, Central Library (Third Floor)

Portland Central Library

801 SW 10th Avenue
Portland, OR 97205

Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM,

Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 PM to 8 PM,

Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM,

Sunday from 12 PM to 6 PM

This project is a collaboration between photographer Jim Lommasson and poet Willa Schneberg. Jim Lommasson has created “What We Carry” projects around the U.S. with the houseless, and with refugee communities who were forced to flee their homelands. Willa Schneberg is the recipient of two fellowships and the Oregon Book Award in Poetry, both from Literary Arts.

At the What We Hold & Leave Behind exhibition at the Central Library Collins Gallery in downtown Portland, object images are coupled with the poets’ hand-written poems in the white space of 19” x 13” archival pigment prints. Included are their actual physical objects, memorabilia and artist books.

This project celebrates the lives of senior seasoned poets, including former Poet Laureates Paulann Petersen and Kim Stafford. In his studio, Jim Lommasson photographed the objects of special significance from over 25 master poets— objects that reveal what truly matters to them, acknowledgments of well-lived lives in terms of work, family, relationships, identity, place, and loss. These elder poets paired Jim Lommasson’s images of their objects with poems, and hand-wrote them with great care. Some poets with shaky hands employed scribes. They met in Willa Schneberg’s office to share their prints and poems with each other.

During “Cover to Cover,” the celebration leading up to the 2025 Portland Book Festival, Jim Lommasson projected slides of each print, as 20 of the celebrated poets shared their poems to a packed audience of over 70 at the book-cramped digs of Mother Foucault’s in SE Portland.

It is important that this exhibition, reading, and poetry workshop showcasing this project should be at the Central Library, which has one of the largest readerships in the U.S. and also one of the few that has an exhibition space. Especially since the pandemic, it has not always been a place that many, particularly elders, have experienced as a safe space. We see it as the magnificent house of books in which poets feel honored to have their work in the John Wilson Special Collections Room, check out books and visit the Collins Gallery. The poets in the What We Hold & Leave Behind project believe this is the perfect location to show the prints of Jim Lommasson and to celebrate their lives through poetry.

Poetry Workshop for elders: Sunday, August 23, 1-4PM

On Sunday, August 23, 1-4PM, Willa Schneberg will offer an inclusive poetry workshop to seniors in the community. Participants will bring their special objects and write poems about them, (no prior writing experience necessary).

Suggested registration opens 3 weeks before. Location: Room 1A https://multcolib.org/events-classes/poetry-writing-workshop-elders-led-willa-schneberg

Giant Geyser, Yellowstone - Terry Thompson

Yosemite Creek, Winter - Jim Fitzgerald

The combined forces of Terry Thompson and Jim Fitzgerald gave rise to their show known as Winter: Y 2 Y (Yosemite to Yellowstone). Their images that capture the feeling of light, bitter cold and subtle details of their environments are presented as Platinotypes and carbon transfer contact prints.

Rich with precious metals and displaying special techniques developed over many decades, Terry Thompson’s Platinotypes are unique, one-of-a-kind glimpses into the frozen world of Yellowstone. The challenges of working with film in sub zero temperatures are many; but the desire to complete his vision overcomes all of these obstacles. His prints, made by hand, exhibit his connection to the environment.

Meanwhile, the delicate richness of Jim Fitzgerald’s carbon transfer prints transport the viewer through the corners of Yosemite which are only accessible in the cold frozen days of winter. Each hand-made carbon transfer print is a testament to the beauty of this frozen landscape. Utilizing unique pigments and special formulas, known only to the artist, the luminous icicles in the frozen waters of Bridalveil creek and rare seasonal snow melts of El Capitan meadow glisten against the steadfast Black Oaks in a three dimensional dance of light.

The images of harsh winters of Yellowstone and Yosemite are but a glimpse of their natural beauty that they desperately need to preserve. Everyone must make every effort necessary to save people’s National Parks and environment from the ravages of mankind. Winter: Y 2 Y is a reminder of the power of Mother Nature, a power that can be subtle or devastating.

We welcome the exhibiting artists:

Daniel Sackheim • Laura Goin • Jim Bailey • Sharon Kain

Moishe Lettvin • Rebecca Moseman • Philip Sager

Brigitte Bourger • Landry Major • Jennifer Pritchard

This exhibit features the work of the advanced alumni collective of Susan Burnstine.

"Some artists shoot the world around them; others shoot from within. This group of artists creates from their own worlds, perspectives, and experiences with a clear, consistent intention — a staple of my teaching.

While this collection reflects a diverse spectrum of subjects and processes, the consistency lies in each artist’s unique connection to the work. This connection is not only personal; it is unusual and difficult to replicate in today’s crowded market, as it reflects the distinctiveness of each creator.

Realms of Perception features an exceptional group of artists, all of whom have studied with me for an extended period, either in classes or private mentorships over five years or more. From earning a Guggenheim Fellowship to being named among Photolucida’s Top 50 in Critical Mass, each artist stands out for a truly distinctive vision.

For nine months, members of the Advanced Alumni Workshop worked under my guidance while also participating in monthly reviews with several esteemed members of the photographic community, expanding their knowledge, connections, and clarity of direction.

This collective has become far more than a group of students. They are cherished friends, and it has been an honor to support each of them as they forge new paths of understanding”.

Exhibition Launch

Thu, Aug 6, 2026

What's lurking behind the condiments? Are you haunted by the phantom of midnight snack run? Our next 50th anniversary online exhibition open call pays homage to the 1990 exhibition The Refrigerator Show. We are looking for pictures that shine a light on the chilling shelves of our mystery boxes. Whether it's a perfectly organized drawer or a graveyard of expired vegetables, we want your best shots of what's really chilling in the back!

We encourage you to submit up to three images connecting the theme “The Fridge Show” by Fri, Jul 17 at 4:59 PM (PT). The show will be published on Thu, Aug 6, 2026.

In October 1975, five unemployed but passionate photographers envisioned a $40/month, 125 sq ft storefront as a space to exhibit photography. 50 years and more than 1,000 solo exhibitions and 60 group shows later, Blue Sky Gallery is celebrating its legacy with a new online exhibition series: 12 themed online open calls, one for each month of our 50th anniversary year.

My name is Bailey Lemkau and I am a photographer from Junction City, OR. I primarily focus on film photography and analog processes.

I received my Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of Oregon in 2023 where I studied analog and conceptual theory. During that time, I aided in many Intro to Darkroom classes and helped folks learn how to understand the film camera.

Since then, I have worked in photo labs, shown work in galleries, and now primarily lead a community based photo club in collaboration with Friend’s Share Community Space located in Eastern Portland.

Accessibility, process, and play are my main focuses in photography. I celebrate mistakes and accidents by allowing them to steer me in a direction I could never have expected.
